A great time was had by all. New friendships were formed and for the riders this was one of the most challenging three day cycling events they had ever participated in. The DRTT covered a distance of 229 miles with 24,176 feet of climbing. The weather cooperated as much as possible for early June in the Colorado Rockies. The ride commenced - as now tradition at the Hillside Cemetery in Silverton, CO on Friday June 5th. A memorial flag was planted in honor of Barry's deceased parents, Irvin & Rhoda Sopinsky. Memorial flags were also planted on day two at Telluride's Lone Tree Cemetery and day three at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango.

The weather cooperated as much as possible for early June in the Colorado Rockies with day one starting off slightly chilly in the early morning, however by the time you had conquered the first climb - Red Mountain Pass you were pretty comfortable.

Bikers During Race   Mountain Pass Sign

The decent of Red Mountain was a challenge with many technical switchbacks - then into Ouray for a break. From Ouray to Ridgeway was a nice rolling ride on the Million Dollar Highway. The balance of day one became more difficult as we turned west for climb number two -Dallas Divide into Placerville. The strong headwind now became the obstacle to conquer - not just the 8,970 foot pass.

Finishing day one into Telluride after the strong headwind over Dallas Divide was challenge number three for the day.

Looking for riders making the last climb of the day.

Watching for Riders

Day two was to be a nice long downhill after Lizzard Head Pass (10,223 ft) - climb number three. Well a nasty headwind made the 71 miles yet another hard challenge for the riders.

A quick stop in Rico produced a some humor with Skip's performance in front of the Theatre Café.

After passing through Mancos there was another easier climb over Hesperus Hill then ending day two with a wonderful 12 mile decent into Durango.

Day three in Durango started off a beautiful sunny morning with the Iron Horse right on schedule.

The last two climbs - Cool Bank and Molas pushed the riders to give everything they had to complete the 229 miles ending back in Silverton, CO.

Jared Hall was very happy to have achieved the last climb of the tour.

So if you think this is an event you would like to participate in - then go ahead - sign up! You'll have a great time.

DEATH RIDE Tour IV – June 8-10, 2012 – Tour Recap.

First I can't thank everyone enough who participated in this year's event. Whether you were a rider, a sponsor or you volunteered your time, please accept my appreciation and gratitude for what you did. I just can't thank you all enough.

I know I keep saying this, however, each year the DEATH RIDE Tour … Ride For Life .. now with added tag – "For Those Who Care" totally exceeds my expectations and 2012 certainly was no exception. Participants were up in 2012 from 75 in 2011 to123 who completed the three day 230 mile course with 16,500 feet of elevation gain.

The weather again was perfect – sunny days in the mid 70's. There was a bit of wind going up & down Dallas Divide and Lizard Head Pass, however, nothing really to complain about.

The support provided by Heromosa Tours & VeloSoul Cyclery was great. I'd also like to thank everyone in Silverton – especially George, Shasta & Cathy at the Grand Imperial Hotel and Tana & Rodger and the Wyman. Without these two hotels and the support of their owners – the DEATH RIDE Tour would not be a successful event. Tana & Rodger went over and above donating their time and money to put on our rider appreciation barbecue on Sunday at the end of the event.

In Telluride – thanks to Chris and Telluride Alpine Lodging for the sponsorship support and a great rate at the Mountainside Inn.

No doubt the highlight of this event is always doing the check presentations. I am very pleased to announce that in 2012 our total donation contribution from the efforts of the DEATH RIDE Tour… Ride For Life… For Those Who Care was $40,000. Here's how it all broke down:

  • $10,000 donated to ALS Association, Rocky Mountain Chapter
  • $2,500 donated to the Blazeman Foundation to support ALS Research
  • $25,000 donated to Children's Hospital Colorado
  • $1,500 donated to the American Red Cross to support the Colorado Fire Victims
  • $1,000 donated to Team Bone Fish in support of the Courage Classic & Children's Hospital CO

I will close by saying thanks to all the participants and sponsors that helped make 2013 a huge success. We hope to see everyone back in 2015 for DEATH RIDE Tour VI – June 6-8, 2015.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, the DEATH RIDE Tour had to be cancelled in 2014. We are back in 2015 and stronger than ever.

2014

The "Official" DEATH RIDE Tour did not take place in 2014 due to some personal issues that the founder Barry Sopinsky was going through, however, there were three “Unofficial” DEATH RIDE Tours that was done by three groups to keep the spirit and meaning of the DRT alive. As Bicycle Bob so well put it "The Death Ride is more than a cycling challenge; it is a test of will. A conversation with one’s own faith of spirit to endure. The confidence gained by persevering in the face of hardship and exhaustion serves one in all facets of life".

The Fire Velo team did the ride a bit later than the regular DRT. They did the tour June 27-29, 2014.

Another group was Ben Daily, Neil McCasland and Chris Achee along with support provided by Susan McCasland who came out from Texas. Ben is a photographer and will actually be providing photography services at the 2015 DEATH RIDE Tour.

As with any good long bike ride there is always the liquid refreshment in Silverton after conquering the last day and Molas Pass. I would like to personally say thank you to all the “Unofficial” DEATH RIDERS from 2014. This meant so much to me personally to know that the spirit would continue. For the first time in 5 years the DEATH RIDE Tour did not make any donations to charity, however, the true meaning of TZEDAKAH – To Give Back…To Be Righteous…To Do The Right Thing was certainly evident in 2014.

Sincerely,

Barry's Signature
Barry Sopinsky

2015

DEATH RIDE Tour VI proved to be a bit of a challenge starting off. For the first time in six years the weather Saturday morning June 6th in Silverton was chilly & rainy with news of snow on Red Mountain Pass. After careful consideration for all riders it was decided that the Tour would go on, however, anyone wanting to SAG up and down Red Mountain Pass the logistics crew would take care of this.
